The opportunity

Description

The role

Our client is building a group-level AI Center of Excellence to set the technical direction for artificial intelligence across its operating companies. This role owns computer vision: models that hold up in industrial conditions — variable lighting, occlusion, motion, and far less labelled data than a benchmark provides. The work spans inspection and defect detection, 3D perception, video understanding and visual input to robotic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Vision models. Design and train models for detection, segmentation, tracking, 3D reconstruction and video understanding.
  • Industrial inspection. Build quality, defect and condition-monitoring systems that meet the accuracy the business actually needs.
  • Data scarcity. Apply self-supervised pretraining, synthetic data and active learning where labelled data is limited or expensive.
  • Edge deployment. Optimise for real-time inference on constrained hardware through quantisation, distillation and compilation.
  • Evaluation in production. Establish the evaluation, drift detection and monitoring that vision systems need once deployed.
  • Cross-team contribution. Supply the visual perception layer to robotics and multimodal work within the Center.

Requirements

Experience

  • A career specialised in computer vision, with sustained depth rather than general ML coverage.
  • Vision systems delivered into production, with accountability for their behaviour in the field.
  • Experience with real-world imagery, not benchmark datasets alone.
  • Strong Python and PyTorch, with deployment and optimisation experience.
  • Exposure to manufacturing, inspection or industrial imaging is a distinct advantage.

Technical areas

  • Detection, segmentation and tracking
  • Vision transformers; self-supervised pretraining
  • 3D vision and multi-view geometry
  • Video understanding and temporal modelling
  • Synthetic data and domain adaptation

Education

A postgraduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related discipline with a computer vision specialisation, from a leading institution in the United States or India. A doctorate is preferred.
