When a fractional CXO is the right leadership move
How to use interim executive capacity without losing governance, accountability, or momentum.
Name the leadership gap
The organization should know whether it needs stabilization, transformation, buildout, governance, or functional expertise before selecting a fractional leader. These call for genuinely different people, and the mandate charter should say which one it is.
Write down the decision rights
The most common way interim leadership fails is ambiguity about what the interim leader can decide alone. This should be settled in writing in the first week, not discovered in month three.
Design the transition
Fractional leaders create more value when they prepare the permanent role, operating rhythm, and leadership handoff from the start. An interim period is also the best possible research for the permanent specification.
